The ultimate irony of the UK and European Arsenal Economy is its reliance on a localised energy source that is physically mutating. Building a 21st-century industrial and military complex requires predictable, high-density exergy. But to predicate this grand strategy on the assumption that the North Sea will serve as an infinite, predictable battery elevates a statistical error to a thermodynamic farce.
This assumption is based on historical weather averages—a classic ‘Strong Enlightenment’ error: that specific mutation of Enlightenment thought which, married to the colonial frontier mentality, treats the planet as a static, mechanistic spreadsheet and an infinite larder, rather than a materially closed, entropy-constrained thermodynamic engine whose limits are now knocking at the door.
This error persists because, for a brief anomalous interval, it worked. The fossil fuel pulse created a temporary condition in which the map appeared to alter the territory. Draw a line in London, and a railway appears in India. Write a financial instrument in Amsterdam, and forests fall in Indonesia. Model an economy on a spreadsheet, and the joules obediently flow to meet the forecast—because there was always another coal seam, another oil field, another continent to bring online.
The map became enchanted. It acquired the appearance of causal power.
The managerial class came of age in this enchantment. They learned, deep in their neural architecture, that language precedes matter—that the right policy, the right budget, the right strategic doctrine, if articulated with sufficient authority, will manifest in steel and concrete and joules. They mistook a temporary thermodynamic condition for a permanent metaphysical truth.
Now the pulse is fading, the frontier is closed, and the territory is starting to talk back—through the Cold Blob, the Dunkelflaute, the synchronous condensers spinning uselessly. And the managerial response is to draw a better map. More ambitious net-zero targets. More detailed grid optimisation models. More sophisticated defence white papers. Because that’s what worked before. That’s what always worked before.
They cannot see that the map’s power was never in the map itself. It was in the exergy surplus that allowed the map to be implemented faster than the territory could push back. Now the territory is pushing back faster than the map can be redrawn.
To understand why Europe’s wind models are fundamentally broken, and why the UK is currently suffering through extended periods of zero wind generation (Dunkelflaute), we must look away from the spreadsheet and look at the physical territory south of Greenland: the North Atlantic ‘Cold Blob’, and the resulting ‘Thermodynamic Dimple’.
As usual, I am analysing this through the lens of my SETE framework.
1. The AMOC and the Cold Blob
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is the massive ocean conveyor belt that pulls warm water from the tropics up to Northern Europe. It is the reason the UK has a temperate climate rather than the frozen tundra of its latitudinal equivalents in Canada or Russia.
However, as Greenland’s glaciers melt, a massive influx of fresh, cold water is pouring into the North Atlantic. Because fresh water is less dense than salt water, it does not sink. It disrupts the conveyor belt, creating a massive, stationary pool of anomalous cold water south of Iceland. This is the ‘Cold Blob’.
To the Linguistic Thinkers, this is merely an oceanographic curiosity. To a Relational Thinker, it is a structural deformation of the Earth’s radiator.
2. The Topological Deformation (The Dimple)
Atmospheric thickness is directly proportional to temperature. Warm air expands; cold air compresses.
Because the ‘Cold Blob’ is so massive and so anomalously cold relative to the rest of the warming planet, it forces the local troposphere above it to compress. The physical ‘ceiling’ of the weather system drops. This creates a topological depression—a literal ‘dimple’—in the top of the atmosphere over millions of square kilometres of the North Atlantic.
3. Throttled Entropy Export
This is where the physics become inescapable. The Earth dissipates entropy to space as a function of its surface area:
By physically shrinking the effective altitude (r) of the emissive surface over the North Atlantic, the ‘dimple’ reduces the planet’s localised surface area. The channel capacity for entropy export has been throttled. The Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) worsens locally because the system cannot radiate heat to space fast enough.
Thermodynamics dictates that this trapped energy cannot simply vanish; it must manifest as chaotic work. The dense, cold air mass sitting in this ‘dimple’ acts as a thermodynamic pothole in the Northern Hemisphere’s circulation.
4. Jet Stream Buckling and the Death of the ‘Average’
When the Polar Jet Stream—the high-altitude river of air that drives European weather—encounters this atmospheric pothole, it cannot flow smoothly from west to east as it has for millennia.
When a fluid hits a structural anomaly, it buckles. The Jet Stream begins to meander wildly north and south, creating massive, stationary ‘blocking highs’.
This destroys the historical pressure gradients that the entire European offshore wind fleet was modelled upon. When the Jet Stream buckles around this cold pool, the North Sea is subjected to one of two biophysical extremes:
The Dunkelflaute (Wind Drought): A blocking high stalls over Northern Europe, trapping a stagnant air mass. Wind speeds drop below the cut-in threshold for weeks at a time, exactly when heating demand spikes. The grid is forced to burn hyper-inflated, imported American LNG just to maintain the 50Hz frequency.
Turbine-Shredding Volatility: When the atmospheric block finally breaks, the trapped kinetic energy snaps back, delivering cyclonic storms that force turbines to shut down to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure.
5. The Fallacy of Overbuilding (Correlated Output)
The standard policy response from the managerial class to these falling capacity factors is simply to build more capacity. If the fleet is only operating at 20 per cent, the Neoliberal spreadsheet dictates that we must overbuild the hardware to reach our aggregate demand target.
This betrays a terminal misunderstanding of meteorology and correlation. The atmospheric ‘dimple’ does not create localised, random lulls in the wind; it drops a macro-regional blocking high over the entirety of Northern Europe.
The power output of the North Sea wind fleet is highly correlated. When the wind dies off the coast of Yorkshire, it is also dead in the German Bight and the Celtic Sea. Geographic dispersion does not solve a macro-atmospheric block. Building out additional hardware to compensate for the ‘dimple’ is a catastrophic misallocation of exergy: zero wind multiplied by ten thousand turbines is still zero.
By attempting to overbuild our way out of a thermodynamic pothole, the state is vastly multiplying the Entropic Drag (Fdrag) of the system—mining the copper, smelting the steel, and pouring the concrete—whilst generating absolutely zero additional dispatchable power during a Dunkelflaute. It actively accelerates the ERoEI death spiral.
6. The Phantom Drag: Grid Inertia and the ERoEI Death Spiral
The spreadsheet models of the linguistic planners harbour an even deeper, structural blindness regarding the physical nature of electricity itself. They view power simply as fungible units of MWh. But an electrical grid is a kinetic, physical machine.
Traditional thermal generation (coal, gas, nuclear) provides inherent inertia to the grid. Their massive, synchronous steel turbines spin in lockstep with the system frequency (50Hz). This colossal rotating mass acts as a kinetic shock absorber, resisting sudden changes in frequency (RoCoF) when demand spikes or supply drops.
Renewable generation and international subsea interconnectors operate entirely differently. Wind turbines and solar arrays are asynchronous; they connect to the grid via power electronics and inverters. While they inject electrons, they provide absolutely zero physical inertia. Consequently, as the UK and Europe retire thermal plants in favour of North Sea wind and interconnectors, they are structurally hollowing out the kinetic shock absorbers of the entire grid.
To prevent catastrophic frequency deviations and immediate voltage collapse, grid operators (such as the UK’s NESO) are now being forced to spend hundreds of millions of pounds retrofitting the system with ‘Synchronous Condensers’. These are gargantuan, 170-tonne steel flywheels embedded in concrete bunkers.
Crucially, they generate zero electricity.
They are effectively giant motors plugged into the grid, drawing a continuous parasitic load of active power simply to overcome their own mechanical friction and spin at 3,000 RPM. They exist solely to simulate the inertia that the wind fleet cannot provide.
Thermodynamically, this is the ultimate manifestation of the system collapsing under its own accumulated complexity. The state must expend vast amounts of Embedded Exergy (MK) to mine, forge, and construct these massive machines, and then allocate a continuous, parasitic stream of Maintenance Power (Pmaint) just to keep them spinning. Because they produce zero Gross Power (Pgross), they act as a severe, unacknowledged drag on the Energy Return on Energy Invested (ERoEI) of the entire grid. We are systematically burning high-grade exergy simply to bandage the systemic fragility introduced by intermittent renewables, driving our Effective Circulating Power (Peff) ever closer to zero.
DATA ANNEX: The Thermodynamics of the Arsenal Economy
The fatal flaw of the European geopolitical strategy is attempting to pair a continuous, high-exergy industrial expansion with an intermittent, atmospherically degraded power supply.
A. The Exergy Demands of Rearmament
Based on recent defence industrial data (including Leonardo S.p.A. projections), Europe has structurally abandoned the post-Cold War ‘peace dividend’ in favour of a massive rearmament cycle. The linguistic planners have budgeted for a continuous capital expenditure boom, but they have ignored the physical heat and continuous baseload power required to smelt the steel, forge the artillery shells, and power the CNC spindles for next-generation combat air systems.
B. The Capacity Factor Collapse (The DESNZ Reality)
You cannot run the industrial base outlined above on a power grid that buckles at the whim of the North Atlantic. The UK government’s own DUKES (Digest of UK Energy Statistics) data proves the vulnerability of the grid to the ‘dimple’:
The Official Truth: Annualised Offshore Wind Capacity Factor: ~39.8%
The Reality (Q3 2021 Buckle): During the Q3 2021 blocking high, the UK offshore capacity factor collapsed to 28.6% for an entire fiscal quarter. Onshore collapsed to 16.6%.
The Micro-Variance (Sub-5% Events): Daily BMRS (Balancing Mechanism Reporting Service) data from NESO shows that during a true Dunkelflaute event, the entire UK wind fleet routinely drops below a 5 per cent capacity factor for 48 to 72 hours continuously.
C. The Exergy Replacement Cost (The Spark Spread Trigger)
When the capacity factor drops from 40 per cent to 5 per cent across a 30GW wind fleet, the grid loses roughly 10.5 Gigawatts of physical output instantly.
To replace this void and provide the inertia necessary to prevent a blackout, the UK must ramp up Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT).
During these ‘dimple’ events, CCGT generation routinely spikes from a baseline of 20 per cent of the grid mix to over 55 per cent.
This forced, inelastic demand for gas triggers the Terminal Spark Spread, forcing the UK to purchase imported US LNG at vertical emergency prices, heavily subsidising the insolvent US shale patch at the direct expense of the British industrial base.
D. The Imperial Imperative: Foraging vs. Simulating
Beyond the immediate grid mechanics, the ‘Arsenal Economy’ contains a fatal thermodynamic contradiction. To a biophysical realist, a weapon is a pure dissipative structure. A combat drone or an artillery shell consumes massive amounts of high-density exergy to manufacture, but unlike a tractor, a cargo ship, or a power plant, it yields zero metabolic return to the host society.
Historically, the massive Maintenance Power (Pmaint) of a military-industrial complex only pays for itself if it is deployed kinetically to steal exergy (hydrocarbons, minerals, fertile land) from another territory. This is the thermodynamic basis of imperialism: the military acts as the foraging organ for the ‘Grand Agency’.
The linguistic establishment frames European rearmament as a passive act of 'deterrence' to protect the liberal order. But this is the map talking. The territory knows that the military-industrial complex is a foraging organ—the same instrument that, during the enchanted interval, secured the exergy flows that made the map seem true. A superorganism does not build a massive, exergy-hungry foraging appendage to let it sit idle. It builds it because it still believes, at some deep cultural level, that there's always more to take from somewhere else. The fact that there isn't—that the Cold Blob is local, the minerals are depleted, and the neighbours are armed—is just another spreadsheet error, to be corrected by a better spreadsheet.
But we must clarify a crucial distinction: Europe is not doing this rearmament; they are merely saying it. Because they lack the continuous baseload power and the domestic supply chains to actually forge the hardware, the ‘Arsenal Economy’ is largely a linguistic simulation. They are allocating fiat currency to defence budgets and presenting PowerPoint slides of next-generation fighter jets, but they cannot physically manifest the machines at scale because their thermodynamic base is broken.
To the extent that they do manage to squeeze physical weapons out of their collapsing grid, the entropic cost is so severe that it would force them into immediate kinetic expansion just to pay for the exergy they burned to build them. Yet, because their grid and industrial base are dying, they lack the logistical tail to actually sustain a resource war. They are trapped in a lethal paradox: cannibalising their domestic material base to build an imperial foraging organ that lacks the caloric strength to actually forage, thereby accelerating their own Resource Entropy Singularity.
Conclusion: The Spreadsheet Meets the Pothole
You cannot forge a multi-domain European defence shield, let alone power an AI superorganism, on a grid that oscillates between absolute zero and destructive maximums based on the buckling of a deformed atmosphere. They are attempting to harvest predictable exergy from a biophysical flow that is actively breaking down, in order to verbally conjure an Arsenal Economy they do not have the joules to build. The ‘dimple’ proves that the map is not the territory. For 150 years, the exergy surplus allowed us to forget this basic fact. We came to believe that the map was the territory—that if we modelled it correctly, budgeted for it adequately, and articulated the right strategy, the physical universe would comply. The Cold Blob is the territory’s reply. It does not recognise the lines we drew. It does not care about the historical averages on the spreadsheet. It only knows that the atmosphere is buckling, the jet stream is meandering, and the wind no longer blows on command.
We are living through the transition from the enchanted interval to the disenchanted age. The question is whether we can learn, before the last temple is built, that the map was never the source of power. The territory was. And the territory has changed.

Thank you Steven! I have been predicting the failure of wind power for a couple decades - the end-point of this climate breakdown, after a period of severe storms, is warm, stagnant entropy ending in drought. Just a suffocating warmth. The joyride on cheap energy is over. With the Strait closing, where can EU get more gas, US is at 94% capacity assuming no further cold snaps. This is really good.
Can you get the various government orgs to read it? Probably not, I suppose. But they desperately need to understand this.
They seem deaf and blind to the reality beginning to slap them across the face. It's as if Adam Smith's "invisible hand" has gone batty and started attacking its admirers, perhaps.
Germany wants to instigate a probe into price gouging at petrol stations because the price of a liter of petrol suddenly jumped to over two Euros. Apparently, has nothing to do with the Strait of Hormuz being closed, in their minds.
Also, you mention the supposed arms buildup and the energy shortfall both of the windmill/ecological issue of the article and the rearmament policy, but add into this dynamic that the rare earth metals are under strict export ban from China thereby preventing the materials needed to build the weapons, regardless of whether the energy is available.
The discourse of the European political classes is drifting so far away from realities on the ground that it makes me wonder if they can still tie their own shoelaces.
It's alarming and disconcerting to be living under the rule of people who suffer from such cognitive dissonance.
At least us Europeans aren't rambling about the second coming, the Messiah and Armageddon, like the Yanks. Cold comfort all the same.
We are in serious trouble... correction... We have been in serious trouble for a while and now the consequences are beginning to hit.
