In Systemic Stupidity Part I, I argued that our political economy is ‘wired to fail’—not due to individual incompetence, but because the system itself is structurally incapable of processing biophysical reality. In Part II, we audited the terminal acceleration of this stupidity, witnessing the ‘Apex Predator’s’ $1.5 trillion decision to hit the wall rather than turn.
Now, in Part III, we must address the fundamental theorem of this collapse. Why can’t the ‘Good People’ fix the system? Why does Grand Agency (the State) inevitably fail where Ground Agency (the Bioregion) might survive?
The answer isn’t just political or economic. It is a matter of the Physics of Scale.
The Shrunken Man Problem
In a famous lecture, physicist Richard Feynman explained why you cannot simply shrink a human being to the size of an insect. It isn’t a technology problem; it is a physics problem.
At our scale, we are dominated by Gravity. We need thick bones and powerful pumps to move blood against the pull of the earth. But at the scale of an insect, gravity is negligible. The dominant force is Surface Tension. If you shrunk a man to the size of an ant, his lungs would fail instantly. He lacks the surface area to absorb oxygen. He would suffocate.
The laws of physics change with scale.
The ‘Strong Enlightenment’ is built on the denial of this fact. It assumes Scale Invariance—the belief that a Global Empire is just a ‘Village Council’ writ large. It believes you can scale up human governance indefinitely without changing the physics of information, feedback, and control.
We have built a Giant that is currently suffocating because it is trying to breathe with the lungs of a village.
The ‘Household Analogy’ as a Category Error
The most damaging manifestation of this error is the Household Analogy—the ubiquitous political rhetoric that “The State must balance its books just like a family around a kitchen table”.
This is not just a lie; it is a violation of the physics of scale.
The Household (Insect Scale): Operates on Surface Tension. It is a Currency User. It is solvency-constrained. It must capture resources from its immediate environment to survive. Its feedback loops are tight and immediate.
The State (Giant Scale): Operates on Gravity. It is a Currency Issuer. It is not solvent-constrained; it creates the ‘liquid’ the insect drinks. It is Resource Constrained. It fights Inertial Mass (M) and Entropy.
When a politician says, “We have maxed out the national credit card”, they are trying to apply Insect Physics to a Galaxy. They are pretending the State is constrained by ‘Surface Tension’ (money) to hide the fact that it is actually constrained by ‘Gravity’ (Exergy and Entropy).
The Promethiumist Hypocrisy
The most terrifying aspect of this analogy is how selectively it is applied.
For K-Selection (Maintenance): When we need to fix the grid, fund the NHS, or insulate homes (reducing γ), the Household Analogy is invoked. “We are broke! We must tighten our belts!”
For r-Selection (War/Seizure): When the State wants a $1.5 Trillion War Budget or to seize Venezuelan oil, the Household Analogy vanishes. Suddenly, the ‘Magic Money Tree’ (which they claimed didn’t exist) is harvested for unlimited Promethiumism1.
This proves that the ‘Household Analogy’ is not an economic theory. It is a Disciplinary Tool. It is used to suppress the Internal Repair of the population (Active Principles) while giving free rein to the External Expansion of the Empire (Kinetic Solution).
The Three Horizons of Collapse
Why does the Giant suffocate? Because as the scale increases, three horizons collapse:
Feedback Latency: The Household feels the cold immediately. The Empire invades Venezuela and doesn’t feel the blowback until the Local-RES (Local Resource Entropy Singularity) triggers a collapse years later.
Cognitive Horizon: Our primate brains are evolved for the complexity of a watershed (Insect Scale). When we try to manage a planet, we replace Biophysical Reality with Statistical Abstractions (GDP). We stop managing the territory and start managing a low-resolution map.
Temporal Horizon: To fight the massive Inertial Mass of the Giant, the system must maximise immediate throughput (the Discount Rate). It physically cannot afford to look at the long term.
Conclusion: The Decoupling
The ‘Good People’ cannot fix the Empire because they are trying to run a Gravity-based system using Surface Tension logic. They are trying to breathe through lungs that are too small for the body.
The only exit is Bioregionalism. This is not a retreat; it is a Scaling Correction. We must return to the scale where Ground Agency applies—where the ‘Household Analogy’ is actually physically true. We must migrate our value and our loyalty to the scale where we can feel the feedback, understand the complexity, and afford the future.
David did not defeat Goliath by meeting him on the scale of Gravity (Armor and Mass). He won by remaining unseen, mobile, and operating on a different metabolic scale.
We must simply step out of the Giant’s shadow before it collapses under its own weight.
Systemic Stupidity Part IV: The Supernova Illusion
In Part III, we established that the ‘Giant’ (The Global Political Economy) is collapsing under the physics of scale. It has grown too massive for its biophysical lungs.
Promethiumism: A portmanteau metaphor combining Promethean (the mastery of fire) and Promethium (the unstable, radioactive element). It describes the conceptualisation born from a mechanical Universe that neglects Newton's "Active Spirit"—a system that burns brightly but is inherently unstable. See ‘The Mercury Mistake’.

It seems as we move up the scale ladder, each increase requires ever greater levels of systemic complexity to manage. This requires each system function node having a certain minimum level of competence to manage the K-factor. At a certain size the complexity of the system nodes overwhelms the competency available, hence the entropic limit is met. I have seen this first hand in corporate environments, post aggressive M@A buildouts. Liberal democracy also seems to have an inherent scaling tipping point where it just seems to fall off the thermodynamic cliff.
Really enjoying your essays, they really make you reexamine your assumptions.
I'm interested in that Feynman lecture. Which is it? Is there text somewhere?
