Manifest Destiny: The Thermodynamic Hubris of the True Believer

The term ‘Manifest Destiny’, coined in 1845, is the perfect linguistic artefact of the Strong Enlightenment. It represents the precise moment when the Ideological Superstructure (S) claimed total sovereignty over the Material Base (M_B). It established a national psychology that views resources not as finite exergy stores, but as ‘Divine Grants’ guaranteed by the ‘inevitable tide of history’.

But to understand why this 19th-century delusion is driving the US toward the 21st-century Kinetic Solution, we must look to its modern archetype: Stockton Rush and the implosion of the Titan.

Rush was not an anomaly; he was the personification of Manifest Destiny in the digital age. He exemplifies the specific psychological mechanism—Acoustic Rationalisation—that allows the American Institutional Core to steer the global economy into the Resource Entropy Singularity (S_crit) with sincere, suicidal confidence.

The Erasure of Entropy: From the Oregon Trail to the Abyss

Manifest Destiny was an attempt to turn History into a Law of Physics. By calling expansion ‘Manifest’, the 1845 US elite suggested that the energy required to conquer and settle the continent was ‘pre-paid’ by Providence, effectively removing the concept of Entropic Cost from the national consciousness.

Stockton Rush applied this same logic to materials science in 2023. He believed his ‘Destiny’ to disrupt the deep sea was more real than the 6,000 PSI pressing against his hull. He viewed safety regulations—which are merely codified Thermodynamic Limits—as the ‘Indigenous Resistance’ of the old world. They were treated as obstacles to be swept aside in the name of the Manifest Future.

Acoustic Rationalisation and the Silenced Engineer

The most terrifying aspect of the Titan tragedy was not the failure of the hull, but the failure of the Operator’s mind. The sub was equipped with a ‘Real-Time Acoustic Monitoring’ system that detected the sounds of the carbon fibre delaminating. The dashboard showed structural pre-failure events; the Material Base was screaming that Maintenance Power (P_maint) had been exceeded. Yet Rush did not surface. He rationalised the sounds as the material ‘settling’ or ‘normalising’.

Crucially, this rationalisation required the Silencing of the Sceptic. When David Lochridge, OceanGate’s safety chief, produced a report warning of the hull’s flaws, he wasn’t thanked; he was fired and sued. The True Believer cannot tolerate the Engineer because the Engineer insists on the ‘Is’ over the ‘Should’.

This is the exact mechanism driving the suppression of dissent today. The Institutional Core is not composed of cynical sociopaths ignoring the data; they are True Believers rationalising the signal. When ERoEI falls, they call it ‘Transitory’. When Eurodollar liquidity fractures, they call it ‘Modernisation’. When analysts point out the thermodynamic impossibility of the ‘Green Transition’, they are de-platformed or throttled—the Lochridge treatment—not because they are wrong, but because they are ‘Enemies of the Manifest’.

The ‘Unreal Grounding’ of the Carbon-Fibre Economy

This delusion persists because the US Core is ‘Grounded in the Unreal’. Stockton Rush lived in a ‘Synthetic Reference Frame’—the world of VC funding, digital disruption, and ‘move fast and break things’—where consequences are deemed reversible. He believed a carbon-fibre hull, a high-innovation but unproven material, was superior to titanium, a foundational and proven material, because it fit the narrative of Progress.

The US Economy is itself a Carbon-Fibre Hull. It is built on ‘Innovation’, ‘Financialisation’ and ‘Services’—lightweight, high-tech, and brittle. It is diving into a Thermodynamic Abyss that requires a ‘Titanium Hull’ of Heavy Industry, Sovereign Energy, and Real Manufacturing. The Kinetic Solution—vacuuming resources via tariffs and seizures—is the sound of the US trying to force its brittle hull to survive depths it was never engineered for, driven by the belief that its ‘Destiny’ protects it from the pressure.

The Twin Tragedies: Sacrifice for a Doomed Project

We cannot discuss the ‘Tragedy’ of Manifest Destiny without acknowledging that it is, structurally, a murder-suicide pact. The project of Infinite Expansion has always required twin tragedies: the eventual self-destruction of the True Believers, and the immediate destruction of those who refused to get on board—or those who bought a ticket believing the marketing.

First is the Tragedy of the Victim. In the 19th century, Indigenous peoples were displaced to fuel the expansion. Today, the Kinetic Solution casts the Global South in this role—‘vacuumed’ of liquidity, resources and sovereignty to patch the leaks in the American hull.

Second is the Tragedy of the Complicit Passenger. The UK and EU are not merely victims; they are Complicit Passengers. Like the wealthy tourists on the Titan, they paid—in sovereignty and political capital—to be part of the ‘Special Relationship’. They surrendered their own Sceptical judgment to the ‘Unreal Grounding’ of the American captain, believing that the ‘Innovation’ of the West would protect them.

However, they failed to realise that to the American Captain, they are not guests; they are Auxiliary Energy Stores. The US Economy is now so thermodynamically insolvent that it can only maintain cabin pressure by draining the liquidity and resources from its allies. The ‘Kinetic Solution’—the tariffs, the energy premiums, the capital flight to Wall Street—is the sound of the US consuming the passenger cabin’s reserves to buy the Pilot a few more minutes of depth.

The supreme horror is the Tragedy of the Waste: this sacrifice is for nothing. The Indigenous were not displaced to build a permanent Utopia; they were displaced to fuel a heat engine that is now running out of fuel. The ‘Global Landlord’ is currently cannibalising the periphery to power a machine that is thermodynamically guaranteed to implode anyway. It is the sacrifice of the living to feed the dying.

Ground Agency: The Survival of the Un-Manifest

The implosion of the ‘Manifest Destiny’ project is inevitable. A linear ideology cannot survive in a cyclical, entropic universe. Rush couldn’t stop diving because his identity was built on the premise that he was right and the physics was wrong. The US Empire cannot stop ‘vacuuming’ because its identity is built on the premise of Infinite Frontiers. The Grounding Event will come.

However, the implosion of the Project is not necessarily the end of history. There remains the possibility of Ground Agency—a capacity to act derived from contact with the Earth-frame rather than the Ideological Mass.

This offers no solace to the victims already fed into the furnace, nor to the Complicit Passengers trapped in the hull. Their tragedy is absolute; they are the spent fuel of a failed delusion. But for those who refused to board, and those who were silenced for pointing out the cracks, the collapse of the ‘Unreal Grounding’ is a clarification.

When the carbon-fibre hull fails, the ocean remains. The thermodynamic limits that destroyed the True Believers are the same laws that support the Sceptical. The future does not belong to those who tried to Manifest a destiny over the Earth, but to those who maintained the agency to live within it. The silence following the implosion is not the end of the world; it is simply the first moment in centuries where the noise of the Machine stops, and the dynamic equilibrium of the Earth reasserts itself. To a species deafened by the roar of the furnace, this silence may feel like a mystical void—but it is simply the sound of the Earth being heard again.
